Pressestimmen
"Maybe more rock stars romanticized his life and addiction than actually read his books, and some tried "to boost their own hipness through association," but Rae builds a convincing case that Burroughs has been underacknowledged in rock history. [Rae's book] nudges a legendary legacy from the cultural margins toward the mainstream."--Kirkus"Casey Rae has uncovered a vast, vast number of links between Burroughs and the music world, and he has put together an extraordinary book...will inform and delight anyone interested in the Beat icon."--Beatdom (04/11/2019)"[Rae's] focus on Burroughs' inspiring connections to literary rock stars of exceptional talent and renown makes for a welcome addition to the Burroughs shelf."--Booklist (05/19/2019)"A fluid, wide-ranging biography of influence...Essential reading for fans of Burroughs, Bowie, Reed, or Smith."--Library Journal (03/19/2019)"There's a brilliant idea behind Casey Rae's William S. Burroughs and the Cult of Rock 'n' Roll, which is that if you simply follow Burroughs through the rock 'n' roll years you'll see him achieve a flickering ubiquity—lurking here, eavesdropping there, photobombing the whole parade. It becomes a kind of alternative history."-- (05/24/2019)"Casey Rae tells the whole story of a heroin addict who refused to hide his homosexuality during a time of saccharine conformity writ large across the American cultural landscape."--Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (05/28/2019)"I was consistently surprised and impressed by the wealth of information Rae had gathered for this book. William S. Burroughs and the Cult of Rock 'n' Roll will no doubt enlighten and entertain its readers, even the ones who think that they know everything there is about El Hombre Invisible."-- (04/01/2019)"Melding personal reflections with scholarly research and interviews with those close to Burroughs, Rae has unearthed a trove of information sure to shake the foundation of even the most die-hard Burroughs junkie or rock fanatic."--Billboard (06/10/2019)"[Rae] writes with the passion of a teenager discovering new sounds, and the control and self-assuredness of a seasoned academic...William S. Burroughs and the Cult of Rock 'n' Roll celebrates not only the gifted mind and bizarre life of a writer who changed literature forever with his magic and ideas; it also finally gives him the place he deserves in the pantheon of rock and roll."-- (06/12/2019)"[Rae] discerns that some pop artists were looking 'to boost their own hipness' by seeking an association with Burroughs. But he also asks what it was about the dark, peculiar, and never popular author that made the likes of Deborah Harry, Ricahrd Hell, and Nick Cave want to tie their names to his."-- (06/15/2019)

A book about Burroughs and Rock’n’roll??? Sold! I admit, being a disciple of both gentlemen Bowie and Burroughs, I have ordered that book instantly. Mainly because of the cover. And I don’t regret it. The book is well researched and covers probably every artist and band related in one way or another to Burroughs, whether they met awkwardly like Ian Curtis, met one evening like Lou Reed or spent time together and worshiping each other like Patti Smith. This is the definitive and most comprehensive book about one topic: William Burroughs and his relationship with and influence on the music business, especially on Punk and Counterculture, starting with the Beatles' Tape experiments and ending with Ministry's sampling, and goes on posthumously even more evident into our internet age.The only bummer for me, having read already a lot about most of the usual suspects mentioned in the book, I hardly learned something new. But this is not a real complaint. It was an interesting and entertaining (re-) read anyway and I really enjoyed it.The chapters that got most attention of the author are obviously Bowie, also Cobain, Throbbing Gristle, Jimmy Page, Punk, Industrial, Lou Reed and Patty Smith. There is a great amount of biographical facts about Burroughs himself, the musical genres and all the people concerned, and inevitably their spiritual, esoteric or occult interests - although these unfortunately are always the same stories, well researched anyway and written with a good portion of humour, but nothing new here as well. Probably because there simply is no more information available. Also the topic that would have interested me most and which I hoped to get a bit more out of the book, is the relationship between Burroughs and Paul McCartney and the Beatles‘ tape experiments. But unfortunately Mr. Rae did not find out more than me either.Such a book published in 2019 obviously should deliver some mind blowing new facts or Information, or jut some unseen pictures. But the book is just too good to complain that too.I am happy to give 5 stars especially for offering a handful of great new details based on personal contact with people like Victor Bockris and James Grauerholz. What makes the book outstanding for me is, since most Burroughs Bios are written from a literary or fine arts point of view, discussing his cultural impact. This one is a new perspective through the filter of Rock‘n‘Roll and is definitely not only written for music fans but also everybody who is interested in Counterculture or even Pop, as it covers so much topics and goes far beyond music.
