Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Den Inhalt kann ich nicht wirklich beurteilen: Er hat vermutlich fünf Sterne verdient. Meine Rezension betrifft nur die Kindle-Version: Die wichtigen Grafiken enthalten Textelemente, die sich punkto Schriftgrösse nicht anpassen lassen.Ich schätze den Kindle, da ich damit auch bei schlechten Lichtverhältnissen ohne Lesebrille problemlos lesen kann. Dieses E-Book ist für mich jedoch nicht lesbar: Beinahe schien es mir, als bräuchte ich dazu eine Lupe. Die Reduzierung von vermutlich seitengrossen Grafiken auf Kindle-Format lässt die Textelemente, hier z.B. die Bezeichnungen der Sternbilder, auf eine kaum mehr lesbare Grösse zusammenschrumpfen.Für Kinder und junge Leute ohne derartige Sehprobleme mag diese Einschränkung keine Rolle spielen - vorerst!Ich habe das E-Book deshalb zurückgegeben.
H. A. Rey is best known for his "Curious George" stories, but he was a scientist by profession and he also wrote two books on stargazing for children. If you have a child who is interested in the stars, this book is delightful and highly readable. And if YOU are interested in the stars, dont hesitate to get it for yourself! Rey has a unique way of showing the constellations: he actually went through the trouble of drawing lines between the stars of a constellation to form a meaningful picture - so Gemini (the twins) actually looks like a pair of twins, Cetus (the whale) looks like a whale, and so forth. A word of warning: to form these pictures, Rey often had to rely on dim stars. Don't expect to see them from the city! Access to a dark country sky is essential to get the most out of this book. That said, "The Stars" makes the mastery of stargazing accessible and fun for children and adults alike.
I was given the hardbound version as a gift from my father's business contact in the early 1960s. For years it sat on my shelf, too advanced for me. Then, as a young teen, I picked it off the shelf, curious about it, and read it cover to cover. What a delight to discover that this book was by the same creator as "Curious George"! His artwork is clear and kid-friendly! By slightly redrawing the connecting lines between stars, H.A.Rey makes the constellations LOOK like the objects they are named after. Each edition contains a ten year table of locations for spotting the planets among the zodiac. Be sure to buy an edition that has a table valid for the coming decade for your child or adult to fully utilize in the years to come. -A superior volume. I can't say enough about this book!
This is a book for all ages. I grew up with this book when I was young. With it I came to know the contellations and astronomy. Today my career is in the field of science partialy because of writers such as H A Rey who took the time to make seemingly complex subjects understandable to everyone. I'm buying this book again so that I will have an up-to-date edition. I'm an amateur astronomer and I still use and love this book. I also rely on it mainly because my image of constellations was built on the information in this book. I can't see constellations as "a box with four sticks". I have to see them the way they are in this book.
I found this book helpful while researching my children's book about Maria Mitchell, America's first woman astronomer. I'm sure the young Maria, looking at the stars from her Nantucket rooftop in the 1840s, would have appreciated a book like this!
