After getting her MD, she did her residency at Stanford, where she met the intersex patient who inspired None of the Above, her debut novel. Doch wirklich verwunderlich ist es nicht, denn Kristin Lantimer ist beliebt, gilt als zugänglich, lieb und nett und befindet sich in den Kreisen der anerkannten High School Schüler. Ihr Leben scheint gut zu laufen und sie will mit ihrem Freund Sam einen Schritt weiter gehen.Aber bei ihrem ersten Mal kommt es zu Komplikationen. Sie hat starke Schmerzen und sucht mit ihren achtzehn Jahren zum ersten Mal einen Gynäkologen auf. Doch die Nachricht, die sie trifft, kommt unerwartet: Sie hat gar keine Gebärmutter und trage Teile eines Mannes in sich. Sie ist intersexuell.Für Krissy bricht auf einmal eine Welt zusammen. Einzig und allein ihrer Freundin Vee vertraut sie ihr Geheimnis an und auf einmal weiß die ganze Schule über ihre Intersexualität Bescheid.Intersexualität, das unbekannte dritte GeschlechtJeder kennt Transsexualität, Homosexualität, Bisexualität oder Heterosexualität. Doch beim Begriff Intersexualität hängt ein riesiges Fragezeichen über den Köpfen. Was ist das überhaupt? In erster Linie tragen diese Leute Teile des männlichen wie des weiblichen Geschlechts in sich. Das Facettenreichtum ist dabei riesig und oftmals wird es gar nicht so schnell bemerkt, da Betroffene sich normal fühlen und auch die Geschlechtsmerkmale normal ausgeprägt sein können.Und genau in diesem Zustand befindet sich Kristin Lantimer, die mit ihren achtzehn Jahren feststellen muss, dass sie ja gar nicht weiblich ist. Oder etwa doch? Ist das nur ihr Gefühl oder wie definiert sich das überhaupt? Die Identitätssuche beginnt von neu und sie muss herausfinden, wer oder was sie wirklich ist. Ist sie dann überhaupt noch begehrt? Bin ich ein Monster? Die Spirale dreht sich immer weiter und sie beginnt zu katastrophieren, sich zu verschanzen und sich selbst zu hassen.Als ihr Umfeld auch noch davon erfährt bricht das Chaos aus. Ihre Mitschüler, die überhaupt keine Ahnung überhaupt haben, was es bedeutet intersexuell bedeuten, stülpen ihre Angst zur Transexualität darüber und beginnen sie zu falsch zu interpretieren. Ihre Beliebtheit sinkt von oben in den Keller mit einem Schlag und sie scheint schier alleine dort zu stehen. Was ihr passiert, tut einem im Herzen weh und oftmals wünscht man sich, irgendetwas würde doch geschehen, um das alles zu beenden.Falsche Freunde und das Leben fern der NormDas ihre Freund und ihre Umfeld sehr harsch darauf reagieren, schockiert den Leser zutiefst. Allem voran Sam möchte man am liebsten nur noch eine reinhauen und schütteln, was der Schwachsinn soll. Er soll sie gefälligst unterstützen und nicht so behandeln! Aber gerade das Fremde stellt hier den Grund für den Hass da. Was man nicht kennt, wird sofort abgewertet, wie es so oft im Leben ist. I. W. Gregorio gelingt dabei der schmale Grad der Problemanalyse solcher Leute fern der Norm. Es liegt nicht an den Betroffenen, die auch mit ihrer Selbstfindung kämpfen, sondern auch am uninformierten Umfeld, dass unreflektiert handelt und vieles nur noch verschlimmert. Hätten die Mitschüler anders reagiert, wäre die Sache weitaus leichter zu händeln.Dabei beschreibt die Autorin beschreibt die Mobbingattacken sehr authentisch und schmerzlich real. Sie lässt Cyberbullying einfließen und man möchte nicht zu selten in die Geschichte hineinspringen und einfach helfen, weil es so verletzend ist und wir den Schmerz von Krissy spüren, die doch nur versucht sich selbst zu verstehen und gerade für ihre neue Erkenntnis gedemütigt wird.Das Krissy viele ihrer Freund zu verlieren droht, wird von der Autorin wieder aufgehoben durch Menschen, die bei ihr bleiben oder die sie auch neu dazugewinnt, da es ihnen egal oder sie neutral darauf reagieren. Sie findet Menschen, die ihr helfen wollen und unterstützen, auch Gleichgesinnte. Vor allem der Vater ist eine wunderbare Figur, die man fast schon als Vorbild sehen kann. Er opfert sich für sie auf, stachelt sie an und treibt sie an, die richtigen Wege zu gehen und wertet sie in keiner Sekunde auf. Es braucht mehr Eltern wie den Vater von Kristin Lantimer, die gefühlvoll mit ihren Kindern umgehen und sie so akzeptieren wie sie sind.Einfühlsame Worte, neutral und ehrlichI. W. Gregorio blendet dabei nichts auf. Wer erfahren alles über die Intersexualität, wie sie sich verändert und wie man damit lebt. Vor allem, was die Erkenntnis darüber zu dieser Gruppe zu gehören, bewirkt. So bekommt sie von ihrer behandelten Ärztin ein Dilatationsset an die Hand und wir als Leser bekommen wir fachmännisch erklärt, was es damit auf sich hat. Dass die Autorin selbst Chirurgin ist, merkt man den Roman sehr stark an.Dieses authentische und ehrliche Bild macht es auch leichter Zugang zu der ungewöhnlichen Situation von Krissy zu finden. Man lernt mit ihr ihr Geschlecht kennen und bekommt es in freien Worten erklärt.. Gregorio ist stets bemüht neutral zu bleiben, einfühlsam und trotz allem nichts zu beschönigen. Und das gelingt ihr hervorragend mit einer einfachen Sprache, die auch Jugendliche leicht verstehen werden.Konzept steht über allemGegen Ende hapert es aber leider bei "None of the Above". Nach einer absolut tiefberührenden Szene legt die Autorin leider die Vollbremsung aus und löst die Geschichte fast zu einfach auf. Auch geben die einzelnen Fäden, die sie ausliegt, einen ziemlichen Knoten, der mehr als locker sitzt. Das Konzept und auch das anschließende etwas hingebogene Ende wirken sich auf die Geschichte nicht unbedingt positiv auf und hat etwas Gezwungenes, um ein hoffnungsschimmerndes Ende zu zimmern.Der Roman mündet in einem guten Ende, das fast zu viel Zuckerguss abbekommen hat. Die Geschichte mit ihren Freundinnen wie auch wie es in ihrem Liebesleben aussieht für die Zukunft ist fast etwas zu plump gelöst und wirkt gesteltzt. Wobei es ein Manko ist, über das man gerne hinwegsehen kann bei diesem starken Roman.Fazit"None of the Above" ist ein starkes und wichtiges Debüt mit einem Thema, das nicht oft Anwendung in der Literatur findet. Einfühlsam und authentisch geht I. W. Gregorio mit der Intersexualität um und liefert einen Roman ab, der es in sich hat, trotz seiner kleineren Schwächen. Eine Empfehlung wert!
"None of the Above" is about a LGBTQIA+ topic that is almost completely invisible in our society, even more invisible than bisexuality or asexuality: intersex. And I have to admit that I am no exception to that... although I learned a lot about gender identities, different sexualities and romantic relationships over the last few years intersex people never wwere quite on my radar. Which is a shame, I know. This is why I am happy that books like this one exist. Because it tackles a topic not many people know about – including me.---"Oh, no," Dr. Johnson said. "It's not anything like that. It's just a... a unique genetic syndrome that causes an intersex state - where a person looks outwardly like a female, but has some of the internal characteristics of a male."---As always with sensitive topics like this one you can't really judge how well it is pictured unless you experienced it yourself. So my opinion is just that: my> opinion, how I felt while reading. I can't say how accurate anything is but I can say that I really liked "None of the Above".When trying to sleep with her boyfriend Sam for the first time hurts like hell Kristin decides to see a doctor about it. And her whole world is turned upside down when Dr. Cheng tells her that she is intersex. She has not only XY chromosomes but also testicles. But no uterus.Kristin can't wrap her mind around it. This can't be real. She is a girl, right? She has always been a girl! And she has boobs – so how can she not be a girl?For a long time she keeps the diagnosis to herself but one day she can't bear it anymore and tells her two best friends Vee and Faith about it. And the next day the whole school knows. Kristin goes from Homecoming Queen to outcast within 24 hours. She loses everything: her boyfriend, her friends, her dignity. When the bullying becomes too much for her to handle, she decides to take a leave of absence. Now she has six weeks to get back on her feet and get to know herself again.---"But what does that mean, to 'identify' as a girl? Just because you feel like you're a girl doesn't mean that really are."Gretchen cocked her head."Some people would seriously disagree with you about that. Gender is so totally a social construct."---"None of the Above" handles the topic of intersex really well. I think that I. W. Gregorio did a great job on describing how the diagnosis not only influences Kristin's life but also her perception of herself. She questions her whole life and yeah, I can totally understand that. The self-doubts, the fears and the questions – it all feels real and logical. Is her life a lie? Is she really a girl? How does her "boy parts" change her? What does it mean for her future – academic and personal?But the best part of the book is that it really educates people. When Kristin learns about her diagnosis, so does the reader – in a way that everyone can understand what ibeing intersex means and how it affects someone's life. Also there are some explanations about the difference between gender, sex and identities, which is an important part of Kristin's development. And yes, there is a development. With time she figures out who she is and who she wants to be.So, yes, "None of the Above" is a very good book but it also has its flaws. For example the characters. All of them were kind of flat and stereotypical. Kristin, the nice girl who helps everyone. Vee, the loyal party girl. Faith, the Christian with a good heart. Sam, the football player. We've seen them all. A lot. Everywhere. So they were kind of boring. But this is actually something I can ignore since the rest of the story was done well.Also the ending is kind of clichéd. I can't tell you much to not spoiler you but since this is a Young Adult novel you could probably guess how the last few pages turned out. To my taste it was way to kitschy and predictable. I really wished it would be different from all the other teenager novels but well... you can't have it all, right?!---"Do you know what another word for normal is?"Gretchen reached out for another mozzarella stick and ate it while I racked my brain for synonyms, I was horrible at this game. The only word I could come up with was typical."That's not the one my mom always told me", she said."Then what?" I asked impatiently.Gretchen picked up her glass of water and looked into it. Her lips formed a perfect kiss around the straw as she took a sip."Average", she said.------------ Fazit ---------"None of the Above" is a really important book about an important yet invisible topic. I think everyone – especially teens – should read it. To reduce prejudices, to educate, to become more aware of what's outside of our tiny hetero- and cisnormative bubble. Because not everyone fits into that... and even more important: not everyone wants to.
I really, really like how I.W. Gregorio wrote the story about Krissy. It felt heartbreakingly real, the different stages she went through and how big an impact a diagnoses, like this one, has on everybody. And it shows that there is a lot of work to be done, getting better educated about the subject of being born intersex. I hope that this book can help with that. I certainly went to all the difficulties with Krissy, I felt disbelief, rage, frustration, betray.....and in the end, there was a little ray of hope. Well written and very sensitive is "None of the Above" a book I highly recommend everyone to read. I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I really felt with Krissy who one day learns that she's intersex and has to deal with the hurtful rumours as suddenly the whole school knows about it. The only problem I have are with the author's writing. It is too simple and the transitions are quite abrupt. Also, I was dissatisfied with the ending as I think it was rather rushed.
